NLP for Beginners 2: the WHYs and HOWs

Fields of Application
NLP can be used in many different fields nowadays.

Psychology and Psychiatry
NLP offers unrivalled opportunities. It is a conceptual strategy which involves effective communication and aims at an actual result. The results can be achieved fast and painless for a patient. It can be used to treat allergies, phobias, and different kinds of addiction. For example, in some cases it allows to get rid of the patient’s phobia in 15 minutes. Something which seemed impossible before.
Personal challenges can fall into this category, too. Lack of confidence, fears, even weight loss can be successfully treated using NLP techniques.

Education
Some studies proved that with the help of NLP it is possible to develop students’ abilities more effectively without creating negative emotions that so often go along with the process of studying. Even correct spelling can be taught with the use of Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Business
Business is the field where NLP is practiced on a large scale. Advertisement, staff recruiting, negotiation processes – these are only a few areas where NLP theory is applied successfully. One of the actively used NLP domains is identification of objectives and strategies for their implementation. Another NLP aspect in the business area relates to keeping yourself and your staff fit, maintaining a positive attitude leading to a high job performance level.

Personal Growth and Creativity
Neuro-Linguistic Programming gives people opportunities; a great number of opportunities that can enhance your creativity. Self-cultivation encourages inspiration. You figure out what you want, why you want this and if you really want this. When you learn to understand yourself, to control yourself, to open yourself up to the world, you will only gain more strength and be able to take advantage of your own talents. With the use of NLP you don’t depend on anything or anyone. Not on people, not on inspiration. You are in control of yourself. And then you are the creator.

Some people call NLP techniques controversial. But even they can’t deny the fact that these techniques work. They make someone’s life better. They help someone. They do it today. They are doing it right now.

People are often scared of something they do not understand. NLP might be a little difficult to grasp. But if we give it a try, we will notice that our fears are unreasonable. NLP is not evil. Like many things in life it depends upon who is using it.

NLP for Beginners 1: the WHYs and HOWs

What is NLP?
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It sounds very enigmatic, yet there is nothing mysterious about NLP. It is a mix of neurology, systems theory, and structural linguistics which results in an effective communication method.

When?
NLP is relatively young. Its history began at the University of California, Santa Cruz in the early 1970s. Scientists studied the methods of work used by psychiatrists. The results of these studies were published in 1975 in The Structure of Magic. Volume I followed by The Structure of Magic. Volume II in 1976.

Who?
Richard Bandler and John Grinder, a student and a professor, are the authors of The Structure of Magic books. They combined their knowledge and experience in two absolutely different fields and created a new discipline, known today as NLP. There is another group of people who officially are considered to be co-founders of the theory. Their names are Leslie Cameron, Judith DeLozier, Robert Dilts, and David Gordon.

Why?
It began within the frames of psychotherapy. While studying therapy sessions, Bandler and Grinder found some regularity which they generalized into models. They considered the use of particular linguistic patterns to be beneficial in patients’ treatment. Especially appealing to them was the idea that these patterns can be taught.

Main Motto
If at least one person in the world can do it, then it is possible to teach everyone else!

NLP History 8 - 21st century

By the end of 2000 some sort of rapprochement between Bandler and Grinder was achieved when the parties entered a release wherein they inter alia agreed that "they are the co-creators and co-founders of the technology of Neuro-linguistic Programming. Drs. Grinder and Bandler recognize the efforts and contributions of each other in the creation and initial development of NLP." In the same document, "Dr. John Grinder and Dr. Richard Bandler mutually agree to refrain from disparaging each other's efforts, in any fashion, concerning their respective involvement in the field of NeuroLinguistic Programming." ("Release" reproduced as Appendix A of Whispering in the Wind by Grinder and Bostic St Clair (2001)).

In addition, national regulatory and certification bodies have begun to be founded, notably in the UK, with credentials or standing within psychological and psychotherapy association bodies.

Trademark and IP claims settled, it is a possibility that a more regular platform for the future development of NLP as an ongoing field of endeavour may come into being.
